Club History - 2 of 5

The Golfing Annals, 1900/1901 edition, lists W Merton, H.M Prison Tullamore as the Honorary Secretary. The Club appears in subsequent editions until 1906/7 when the Captain’s name is mentioned for the first time as J.W.E. Dunsterville as is the opening of the new nine hole course in Screggan on lands made available by Captain Briscoe. Screggan was to remain the club’s home for the next twenty years.

During the civil war the club was singled out for attention and the Irish Field of September 2nd 1922 reported on the destruction of the clubhouse by arson. The club crest, embodying a Phoenix arising from the ashes, is indeed an appropriate emblem.

The club moved to its present home in Brookfield, part of the Charleville Estate and in the ownership of the Bury family, in 1926. An 18 hole course was designed and constructed by Captain Hewson, a leading golf course architect of his time. In 1938 James Braid, the famous Scottish Golfer and Golf Course Architect, was commissioned to redesign the course to meet the competitive standards of that time.
